2017 Q-STAGE: NEW WORKS SERIES
May 5-7 & 12-14, 2017
at Intermedia Arts in Minneapolis
All tickets $5-$25 Sliding Scale!
The 2017 Q-STAGE: New Works Series will present four experimental new works from local queer-identified artists or performing groups. As a company we recognize that “queer” can mean vastly different things to different people. To us, “queer” is a term of radical self-definition – and can relate to personal gender or sexual identity, history, presentation, artistic approach and/or content, and so much more.
SET "A" - Performing May 5 & 6 at 7:30pm, and May 7 at 2pm
THE SMITTY COMPLEX
Written & Created by Devin Taylor
Co-Directed by Devin Taylor & Bri Collins
Featuring Beth Mikel Ellsworth, Logan Gilbert Guy, Graeme Monahan-Rial & Courtney Stirn
Smitty is an otter looking for an answer to the question: "what am I?" He finds himself in the office of Dr. Handler--an "expert" determined to resolve Smitty's confusion and help him conform to a proper narrative of otterness. What follows is a surreal look at how the politics of medicine and social welfare interact with the politics of fear, identity, and self-determination. It's mostly a story about an otter.
THESE FLOATING BONES
Created & Performed by Nadia Honary
Video Design by Nadia Honary
Directed by Shalee Coleman
What if birth and death are only points on a circle? Is nature transcendental escape or a manifestation of our minds inner turmoil? Through elemental inspired film, dance, poetry, and music, These Floating Bones seeks to discover answers and to find balance through movement.
SET "B" - Performing May 12 & 13 at 7:30pm, and May 14 at 2pm
Written & Created by Sami Pfeffer
Co-Directed by Sami Pfeffer & Kai Greiner
Featuring Beckett Love & Suzi Love
"_______________" is a haunting, both ghost and story, an interactive investigation into the phantom pains sired by cruelty and abuse. How can we heal from the unreal? And, without acknowledgement, how can we know that we aren't spirits too?
Created & Performed by Simone Bernadette Williams & Holo Lue Choy
"e" seeks to explore the intersections of race & gender identity in an interdisciplinary artistic format. two queer trans people of color articulate through movement, poetry, music, storytelling & performance art their experiences in the complex & beautiful bodies they live within. "e" touches on the stereotyping of trans-femme bodies, the exploitation of queerness and eating disorders' attachment to dysphoria. we will create our own trans queer narrative. when our voices have often been rendered silent, we will speak our truth. so often the conditioning of our bodies by mainstream media is cis & heteronormative, our racial identities are merely supporting characters or punchlines. "e" stands for exposure. stands for empathy. stands for estrogen. for elevation, enigma, evil.
